Instagram Background Play + PiP · Effective date: 21 August 2026

This extension is an unofficial tool. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or produced by Meta Platforms, Inc. or Instagram.

Single purpose

The extension adds picture-in-picture (PiP) and optional background playback for videos on instagram.com (including Reels): seek, volume, speed, like/save via Instagram's own on-page buttons, and a user-initiated MP4 save of the video the user is already watching.

Data we do not collect

We do not collect, sell, or share personal information. There are no accounts, analytics, advertising, or developer-operated servers. User data is not transmitted to the developer or to any third party.

We do not collect personally identifiable information, health or financial data, passwords, personal communications, location, or browsing history.

Website content (processed on your device)

On instagram.com the extension reads page and media content needed for its single purpose: the playing video, on-page like/save controls, and—only if you click Download—the post's video file URL so the MP4 can be saved with Chrome's download manager.

This content stays in your browser. It is not uploaded to us.

Data stored locally on your device

Preferences are saved in the site's localStorage on instagram.com under the key igPipSettings_v6:

• background playback on/off
• follow-active-video on/off
• volume, mute, and playback rate
• PiP window width and height

This data never leaves your device except as stored by the browser. Clear site data for instagram.com to remove it.

Cookies

If you click Download, the extension may read the csrftoken cookie already set by instagram.com so Instagram accepts the media request as your session. Cookies are not copied off the device, not stored by the developer, and not sent to any server we operate. Passwords are never read.

Permissions

The extension runs only on https://www.instagram.com/* and https://instagram.com/*. It uses:

• downloads — to save the MP4 you asked for
• offscreen — to create a blob URL for that save (MV3)
• declarativeNetRequest — to set Referer/Origin on Instagram CDN and API requests so the file can be fetched
• webRequest — to observe Instagram CDN media responses so Download can use a complete MP4 instead of a fragment
• cookies — only the CSRF token described above, for Download
• host access to Instagram and its media CDNs (instagram.com, i.instagram.com, cdninstagram.com, fbcdn.net) — PiP/background play on the site, and fetching the video file when you download

It does not request history or tabs. It does not load remote code. All scripts ship inside the extension package.

Sharing and Limited Use

User data is not sold or shared with third parties. There are no ads or trackers. Data is used only for the single purpose above, not for creditworthiness or lending. This extension does not call Google user-data APIs.

Your choices

Turn features off with the on-page toggles. Clear instagram.com site data to remove preferences. Uninstall the extension to stop all access.

Children

This product is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect children's data.

Changes

If data practices change, this policy will be updated and the date above will change.
